Gabriel, the grandson of the legendary musician Johnny Cash, had chosen to pursue a career in law enforcement instead of music. However, addiction and numerous run-ins with the law caused him to struggle for years. He even served a decade behind bars.
But in 2015, Gabriel received a call from retired businessman Brian Oxley. Oxley had a fascination for Johnny Cash and had even purchased his former farm in Bon Aqua, Tennessee, turning it into an attraction. During his research on Johnny’s family, he learned about Gabriel’s struggles and desire to pursue music. The two talked, and Gabriel expressed his desire to return to music.
Oxley agreed to help but only on the condition that Gabriel first sought help and got his life back on track. A year later, Oxley helped Gabriel record his first album, fulfilling his dream of returning to music.
Today, Gabriel performs his own songs and also covers his late grandfather’s music. He sees it as an honor to sing his grandfather’s songs and as a way of carrying on the family tradition. Gabriel believes that the songs are not just cover songs, but a tradition that has been passed down from generation to generation.
