At the age of 64, Father Ray Kelly, an Irish Catholic Priest, took a leap of faith and decided to showcase his singing prowess on the renowned platform, Britain’s Got Talent.
It was an unusual sight, as priests seldom participate in such competitions.
Regardless of the result, his participation was bound to be a memorable one.
But Father Kelly was not just another intriguing contestant; he demonstrated that he was more than just a man of faith with a heart of gold.
His performance was so impressive that it earned him the highest praise from Simon Cowell, one of the show’s toughest critics.
Father Kelly was no stranger to viral fame.
Before he even set foot on the Britain’s Got Talent stage, he had already had internet stardom.
Several years ago a video of him singing at a wedding, where he surprised the bride and groom with a beautiful rendition of “Hallelujah,” was posted online.
This video garnered more than 89 million views making him a sensation on YouTube.
Being a fan of Britain’s Got Talent, Father Kelly mustered the courage to audition for the show.
The prospect of potentially performing for the Royal Family was a thrilling thought for him.
When he walked on stage and introduced himself, Simon Cowell was unsure of what to expect from the priest’s performance.
However, he kept his thoughts to himself and inquired about the song Father Kelly had chosen to perform.
Father Kelly had chosen to sing R.E.M.’s emotional classic from the 90s, “Everybody Hurts.”
He explained to the judges why this song resonated with him, stating, “It’s a song that’s kind of near and dear to my heart.
I suppose being a priest you get in touch with a lot of pain, a lot of joy, and happiness as well.”
The judges and the audience waited with bated breath to hear Father Kelly’s rendition of “Everybody Hurts.”
The room fell into a hush as he began to sing.
If you’re someone who gets goosebumps from powerful performances, you’d definitely need a warm sweater for this one.
As soon as Father Kelly started singing, it was clear that he indeed “had talent.”
But his talent didn’t stop at his soothing vocals.
The energy was palpable as he sang the powerful lyrics: “When the day is long, And the night, the night is yours alone, When you’re sure you’ve had enough, Of this life, well hang on.”
It was impossible not to be moved by his performance.

Father Kelly ended his performance with the line, “You’re not alone.”

Unsurprisingly, Father Kelly received four “yeses,” advancing him to the next round.
