Zeke was only 13 weeks old and was preparing to be euthanized. But just as time was growing extremely short for the kitten, Lisa Jones, who works with Super Heros Animal Hydrocephalus Society rescued him.
Zeke was a special kitten, and he was gonna need a lot of love and care. Everyone had basically given up on him. But not Lisa. She picked him up in Texas and took him to his new home in New York.
He was born with hydrocephalus, a condition which is commonly known as water on the brain. The fluid beneath his skull puts extreme pressure on his brain, and can cause a multitude of disorders. But with lots of love and care, he can cope.
Says Lisa: “Zeke is hysterical, behaving as any normal kitten should, and despite all of his disabilities, he has a heck of A LOT OF ABILITIES!!!
He romps, rolls, plays and unsuccessfully tried to climb (but it was a good try) and believes his litter box is actually a sand box and digs and somersaults all around in the litter. How do you correct a behavior that is just beyond adorable??? You don’t, you just make sure it’s constantly clean!”
Lisa maintains that, for all his issues, Zeke is an extremely smart kitten. He even comes when she calls his name. And she’s convinced he possesses even higher intelligence than other cats his age.
Lisa says she is dealing with his issues one at a time, and believes that she will have it all figured out eventually. In the meantime, she loves how he is taking things on and facing all of his challenges with courage.
And he has even bonded with another of Lisa’s cats, named Super Hero, which also has the same affliction.
Says Lisa: “Super Hero has taken Zeke under his wing and watches out for him like a little brother. If Zeke is going somewhere he isn’t supposed to be, Hero herds him back into the room or redirects his attention by gently tapping him with his paw.”
And that’s always the best way to take care of family.
