It really can be tough watching our favorite actors grow old. When we follow someone’s on-screen career closely, it’s almost like we become attached to them in some way; we can see them changing over the years as they advance in age.

Of course, that’s the nature of life, and there’s not much to be done about it. Ultimately, all of our favorite entertainers will reach a point where they’re not quite able to produce films or TV shows like they used to. As with the rest of us, their appearances will change to the point where they’re almost unrecognizable compared to how they looked when they were young.

When this happens, many of them begin to fade from the spotlight and are seen less and less as they enjoy the well-deserved conclusion to their time in the public eye.

Celebrated actor Sir Michael Caine might just fall into the above-described category. Having reached the grand old age of 90, the Italian Job star has started to wind down his illustrious career – an undeniably sad prospect for his many fans.

The Academy Award-winning actor has been getting around with the help of a cane since a fall in 2018 left him with a broken ankle.

Caine made a rare public outing on Tuesday night to promote his upcoming film The Great Escaper, appearing in good spirits but also confirming that his days as a working actor are well and truly numbered.

The Zulu star appeared at the BFI in London for the aforementioned film premiere, accompanied by his wife and two daughters.

As per reports, Caine’s latest project is based on the real-life story of a British World War II veteran who “broke out” of his nursing home in 2017 so that he could attend the 70th anniversary D-Day commemorations in France.

Moreover, the iconic actor told The Telegraph that the film was “probably” the last one he would ever make.

“I was so happy to do it. I just loved the character of Bernie. I thought he was incredible, and it’s so beautifully written,” he said.

“With COVID and all that, I hadn’t done a picture for three years, and I thought I was finished. And I suddenly did it – and had such a wonderful time.” He added: “I am bloody 90 now, and I can’t walk properly and all that. I sort of am retired now. Anyway…”

According to the Mirror, Michael’s wife Shakira, 76, confirmed last year that her husband had undergone surgery on his back.

“He had a back operation quite recently. He had spinal stenosis,” she explained.
